Andrew Woehler new leader of BIMSB Technology Platform Microscopy

The MDC welcomes Dr Andrew Woehler, who will establish the new Berlin Institute for Medical Systems Biology (BIMSB) Technology Platform Microscopy from May 1. Andrew will have own research projects and cooperations, but also develop new methods, instrumentation and services for current microscopic technologies (e.g. high-throughput and single-molecule imaging microscopy).

Andrew will work closely with Stephan Preibisch and integrate existing instruments and methods into the new microscopy unit. Another important task will be establishing the microscopy unit at the new BIMSB site in Berlin-Mitte.

Andrew Woehler is from Phoenix, Arizona and studied biomedical engineering Arizona State University. In 2010, he got his PhD about Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) at the Georg-August-Universität, Göttingen in the lab of Evgeni Ponimaskin. Then, he worked as a postdoc at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen and from 2013 on led his own research group in the cluster of excellence “Nanoscale Microscopy and Molecular Physiology of the Brain (CNMPB)”.

In his research, Andrew combined multiple FRET sensors for simultanious real-time imaging of the activity and localisation of different intracellular processes [1]. He also established a high-throughput system that visualized the electrophysical properties of cardiomyocytes with the help of voltage-sensitive dyes. Recently, he published a paper in Science about the imaging of the electrochemical gradient inside single synaptic vesicles [2].
